Sourdough Sunrise

A flour-dusted morning groove that mixes half-time pull, kitchen ritual, and warm domestic detail into something patient enough to actually breathe.

Production Notes

The trick here is using the baking process as rhythm instead of metaphor only. The arrangement rises slowly, folds back on itself, and opens up with the same patience the lyric keeps describing.

This one was written for Maui Wild Crust, a Maui sourdough bakery run with the kind of patience that makes “just check the starter real quick” turn into an entire household weather system. The song is affectionate because the subject is affectionate. Also because fresh bread has a way of making everyone briefly more reasonable.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Flour on my hands
Phone on mute, I’m gone
Kitchen like a little island
Before the break of dawn
Sticky bowl on the counter
Fold it in, let it breathe
Talkin’ to that sleepy starter
Like, “Rise up slow for me” (yeah)

[Chorus]
We got sourdough sunrise, baby
Bagels in the making, oh
Twistin’ every worry out
Into a golden halo
We got sourdough sunrise, baby
Patience on a parchment sheet
You and me just swayin’ in the oven light
To that low and driven beat

[Verse 2]
Finger poke test, I’m waitin’
Watch it gently push back
Steam from the kettle singin’
While I line ‘em on the rack
Drop ‘em in that simmerin’ water
Little sugar, little salt
Thirty seconds, flip ‘em over
If they shine, it’s all my fault (yeah, yeah)

[Chorus]
We got sourdough sunrise, baby
Bagels in the making, oh
Twistin’ every worry out
Into a golden halo
We got sourdough sunrise, baby
Patience on a parchment sheet
You and me just swayin’ in the oven light
To that low and driven beat

[Bridge]
Turn the world down low
Set the heat, let go
Every ring I roll
Is a promise slow
From the fridge to the flame
From my hands to your plate
If love takes time
Then let it ferment late (hey)

[Chorus]
We got sourdough sunrise, baby
Bagels in the making, oh
Twistin’ every worry out
Into a golden halo
We got sourdough sunrise, baby
Patience on a parchment sheet
You and me just swayin’ in the oven light
To that low and driven beat (driven beat)
